Compare Your Morals Update

You can now compare what you think is the “correct” decision to thousands of other players. Are they wrong? Are you wrong? You can now see stats on decisions you make in-game. We want to know which ones players agreed on and which ones generated differences in opinion.

We also added more problems for you to address! 20 new dilemmas which will get you thinking what should I do? More moral problems! We’ve added more scenarios where you have to make tough choices about what’s right and what’s wrong, so that we can keep expanding on this aspect of gameplay and give you more difficult decisions to make.

We also care about privacy, so we had to build our own custom system to track all the trolley problems.

We’re committed to making sure that our trolley problem game is as safe and secure as possible—we don’t track or store any personal information about our users. Only you see your decisions and how you compare to others. When you make a decision it’s recorded anonymously without any data attached to you.

The 2020 Retrospective Update

The game includes the 2020 Retrospective update!

The Base Game

Dr. Trolley's Problem brings the classic philosophical quandaries of The Trolley Problem to life and asks you to make life or death decisions on the fly. Explore your moral fiber in ways you never imagined (or asked for)!

Dr. Trolley is an infamous robot mad scientist from another dimension which has sequestered you in its simulation to answer the most pressing questions:

Should humans be allowed to drive cars? Or would driving (and most other things) be safer in the hands of Artificial Intelligence?

Along the way Dr. Trolley will probe all the classic philosophical quandaries of The Trolley Problem. You'll be asked life or death decisions on the fly. You'll explore your moral fibre in ways you never imagined (or asked for). You'll find out what your friends are made of. And you'll help Dr. Trolley decide if you're capable of making any decisions at all!

Prepare earn your PhD in Trolleyology!

This game is game made for the love of The Trolley Problem and all the weird and wonderful questions it makes you ask about yourself. We thought it would be fun to develop a platform for extending the Trolley Problem in all directions. We eventually want to collect accurate statistics about the choices people make (de-identified data, of course) so users can see what choices other people made in the strange situations the game presents. We'd also like to add new situations over time, possibly themed in interesting ways.

Currently the game includes 50 ethical situations that last anywhere from 30 seconds to one minute each. Some situations involve reading what is presented on screen. Within each situation the player decides whether or not to act to save a character (or not).

Consider your philosophy.

Just pushed another update, but this one is HUGE.

Check out the details in the Compare Your Morals Update.

Hey! Found your game in the BLM bundle and had a fun time recently playing it. Big fan, really curious, are the numbers actually based on any data? Or is it completely randomised? Sorry to ruin the magic if the former.

Anyways, made a video going through the first set of questions. Think I forgot to get an update for it since, since I couldn't access the other sets, but hey, might record more in future.

Great game, Cheers.

Just uploaded an update to address the issues raised below.

I like seeing the trolley drive around.

Talk It Through doesn't reset when I try to play it again.

I tried to download and it completely restarted my computer. That was bizarre.

Menu is bugged in the advanced situations screen. Won't allow you to return to the main menu. Fun little game though!

The tutorial appears to be bugged at the moment, it won't load

Just uploaded a fix to this. Let's hope it works in practice :)

Are the statistics in the game real or fake?

It was a fun little game! Gave me a few good chuckles!

Glad you enjoyed it :)

Interesting little game! But... it doesn't want to let me progress beyond the tutorial. The tutorial worked fine, so I clicked to advance to The Basics, but it just ran the tutorial again. After passing it, I went back to the main menu, into Original Situations, and selected The Basics Part 1. It ran the tutorial again. I don't seem to be able to advance past this point. Can you help please?

I'll look into this, no idea what's causing it off the top of my head.

I'm having the same issue.

Good timing! Just uploaded an update to the game which should fix it.

Great! I look forward to trying it.

Just uploaded an update. Thanks for bringing this bug to my attention, if you find more I'll try and fix those too.

I just downloaded today (so it should be the updated version), and I can't get past the bus part of the tutorial. I just get stuck on the loading screen. I've tried Simple, Fast, and Fastest; lowering the res doesn't seem to effect it.  Any advice?

I'll take a look at it today. That's actually an odd place to be stuck, have you tried skipping the tutorial and selecting a situation from the menu?

I just uploaded a version that *should* fix this.

I went to reinstall and now no matter what way I try, it's saying the current zip is incompatible, or that there are no files at all.

Sorry for all this trouble. Thank you for your help.

I appreciate the feedback. If you're having issues the odds are that other people are too.  Just uploaded a new zip file.
